1883 Chromolithograph Trade Card For 'Ayer's Cathartic Pills' - Quack Patent Medicine; measures approx. 4-5/8 by 2-5/8". Depicts a battle during the Napoleonic wars. The back states that Ayer's Pills are the only STANDARD cathartic.," and were claimed to be unequalled for curing constipation, indigestion, dyspepsia, biliousness, heartburn, flatulence, nausea, dizziness, headache, and more. The Card is in good condition; beautiful illustration but numerous (8) fine creases on the surface.

Very rare and fascinating "1883 Chromolithograph Trade Card For 'Ayer's Cathartic Pills' - Quack Patent Medicine"  The Trade Card measures approx. 4-5/8 by 2-5/8".
This gory and slightly disturbing Trade Card depicts a scene of  cavalrymen in battle during the Napoleonic wars.  One soldier holds up flag, on which is printed Ayer's Pills.   And at the bottom of the card is printed "The fight for the Standard."
Many cards of the era had images used over and over again for a variety of products. The same images can be for medicine or candy. The graphics were intended to catch attention and improve the product's sales, and didn't necessarily have anything to do with the product being sold.
In this case,  "The fight for the Standard," was meant to be a play on words.   Because the printing on the back begins with, "'The Fight for the Standard' is over, and it is universally acknowledged that Ayer's Pills are the only STANDARD cathartic."
The pills were claimed to be unequalled as a cathartic medicine and cure constipation, indigestion, dyspepsia, biliousness, heartburn, flatulence, loss of appetite, foul stomach, nausea, dizziness, headache, numbness, jaundice, diarrhea, dysentery, disorders of the liver, skin diseases, piles, rheumatism, gout, neuralgia, dropsy, colds and kidney complaints.
And just when you begin to wonder how many different drugs they could fit one pill, they go on to explain that "Ayers's Pills are made of vegetable ingredients only.  They are sugar-coated and pleasant to take."

This wonderful and original "1883 Chromolithograph Trade Card"  is in good condition.   Despite the fact that the Chromotithographic illustration is beautifully printed, there are numerous (at least 8) fine creases on the surface.  The good news is that none of the creases go all the way through to the back. And the edges and corners are in good condition, with very minor corner damage in the lower right-hand corner.  The printing on the back is clear and easy to read.  And all this for a card which is more than 135 years old.   (See the photos above.)
Delightful and unique, "1883 Chromolithograph Trade Card For 'Ayer's Cathartic Pills' - Quack Patent Medicine"  is a  wonderful example Chromolithography of the time, and would be a fantastic addition to any Victorian era collection!!!
