The anode and cathode both appear to have plenty of surface area, so if the enterprising type wanted to put a mildly acidic solution, say muriatic, I'll bet it would work. Maybe it was designed to work with something less acidic but readily available? Who knows. When this was manufactured you could buy most anytime you needed from the corner apothecary including heroin and cocaine, so I'm sure carbolic acid wasn't a problem. This is all original, brass hardware in great shape, everything tight, nothing loose, no major scratches, dents, cracks, etc. No repairs that I can see. Only normal marks from being used.
