Weird Pair (2) of Early Quack Medicine Contraptions, Baunscheidt Devices

Description

Great pair of early quack medicine Baunscheidt devices offered for one bid.  Lot includes:
1. Long cylindrical device with removable knob-tipped cap that covers the needles which are inside the bulb portion of the device.  I believe this is made of some sort of very dark wood (ebony?).  The narrow pointed tip of the device is pulled back creating tension on the spring and when released the needle filled “head” of the device springs forward and pierces the skin of the patient.  The idea behind these weird devices was to treat the pierced area of skin with toxic oils, thereby creating inflammation that would draw the body’s attention away from the original ailment.  This device measures 10.75” long and is in very good working condition.
2.  Heavy solid brass device with screw on lid and functioning spring and complete original needle “head”.   Measures just 5” long.  Impressive ornate design and brass construction combine to make this an extremely high end example of one of these Baunscheidt devices.
